READ MORE: Paul Hurst opens up on fresh contract talk ahead of League Two season opener Before another exciting season gets underway, we are here to provide an in-depth assessment of the Mariners’ squad and the most significant talking points for the club in the year ahead. Best signing There have been some moments of frustration and anxiety during this shortened pre-season over signings from the club and its supporters, but overall, I think all involved should be pleased with the business that has been done.
Best youngster It was exciting to see Smith back with the Mariners after a brilliant second half of the season with the club last season, in which he was a key figure at the back as Grimsby secured promotion back to the EFL. The 20-year-old showed maturity beyond his years in the crunch moments, and it will be interesting to see him continue his development with Town. You would assume that Hurst will resume with the Smith and Luke Waterfall partnership that worked so well the last term to start with this time, with Maher out injured.
While one or two areas still need addressing before the transfer market closes, the signings that have been brought in show a level of ambition and future planning that has not been a feature of the club’s recruitment for some time. The signing that has impressed me the most so far was the very first of the window, the tone-setter for the business to come, as Niall Maher arrived from Halifax Town.
Kevin Berkoe replaces Ethan Galbraith. 66' Foul by Ethan Galbraith (Salford City). Hector Kyprianou (Peterborough United) wins a free kick in the defensive half. Attempt blocked. Callum Hendry (Salford City) right footed shot from the centre of the box is blocked. Assisted by Ethan Galbraith with a cross. 65' Attempt blocked.
Kevin Berkoe (Salford City) left footed shot from the left side of the box is blocked. Assisted by Jack Jenkins. Substitution, Peterborough United. David Ajiboye replaces Ephron Mason-Clark. 90' Attempt blocked. Harrison Burrows (Peterborough United) left footed shot from the centre of the box is blocked. Assisted by Jack Marriott. 89' Attempt missed. Harrison Burrows (Peterborough United) left footed shot from outside the box is too high.
The captain and leader of the best defence in the National League last season, entering the prime years of his career at 26 years old, the transfer should make a huge improvement to the team. News of his untimely injury just before the season gets underway is unfortunate. It will hopefully not become a regular occurrence, but the late arrival of a familiar face from Hull should alleviate some fears for the time being. Player to watch An obvious choice, but it will be interesting to see how the Mariners’ main man from last season, John McAtee, will fair with the step back up to the Football League.

Grimsby Town season preview as 2022/23 League Two campaign gets underwayA week short of two months from their play-off final victory, Grimsby Town will embark on a fresh journey in the Football League when they open their 2022/23 League Two campaign away at Leyton Orient. Despite much being made of the quick turnaround for the club, the Mariners have made nine signings this summer, the latest a second loan spell for Hull City centre-back Andy Smith who impressed in a six-month spell with Town last term. Grimsby have also been able to fit five pre-season games and a warm-weather training camp in Tenerife before the start of the season, so despite the rush, Paul Hurst and his side should feel well-equipped for the start.
However, once the latter gets back to fitness, it will likely depend on Smith’s early performances as to whether he will drop to the bench or a system change will be made to accommodate all three. Biggest challenge With the current state of the forward options, there has to be a small concern about who will be able to supplement McAtee with regular goals. The window is still open, and this situation could change quickly, but Ryan Taylor, while a great forward, has never been an out-and-out goalscorer, and Danilo Orsi is relatively unproven at this level. So, the challenge will be sharing the goal burden around the team or finding that player who specialises in that very side of the game before the end of August. There are a lot of variables that go into this issue, but if the Mariners are serious about not being in the league ‘to make up the numbers’, then it needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.
The 23-year-old impressed with his in-game intensity on and off the ball, intelligent running between the lines, and finishing and skill during his debut Town campaign. Still, we get to see how he will respond to all the acclaim from last year and whether he will continue developing. Will he match or even improve on his 16 goals from last term while continuing to be one of the main creative presences and active pressers in attack? Most people believe that he has the drive and ability to do so, and his performances are likely to be crucial again to Town’s overall fortunes.
